Explore the other side of the city, about 20 minutes away from the Albayzín and the city center. This tour will take you to two of the most impressive monasteries in Granada: the Monastery of San Jerónimo and La Cartuja Monastery.
San Jeronimo monastery was comissioned by the catholic monarchs and was the first monastery built after the reconquest of Granada by the Christians. The building materials were all taken from the Puerta de Elvira, the 11th century Arab gate that marked the entrance to the city. It is considered one of the best examples of a Renaissance monastery in Spain. This beautiful peaceful monastery is best known for its Barroque alterpiece, cofered ceilings and elegant cloistre.
The monastery of ‘La Cartuja‘ was built on the remains of a Roman cementery. It is considered a masterpiece of Spanish Barroque arquitecture. Although construction begaun in 1516, it took more than 300 years to complete the building. Its formidable exterior hides one of the most ornate and decorative interiors with special note for the church, the sacristry and altar.
