This is our private Fatima Day Trip from Lisbon where you will discover the Pilgrimage site of Fatima, site of the 20th century´s most famous apparition of the Virgin Mary, is one of the most sough after pilgrimage sites in the world.
Fatima is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Europe for the Catholic church. The small town in central Portugal grew up overnight as the result of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to 3 shepherd children in 1917. It draws millions of people every year, from devout followers to people simply interested in seeing the site. There are a number of walking routes in the area, reminding people of its origins as a tiny hamlet if you move just a short way away from the Sanctuary proper.
Highlights of our Fatima Day Trip from Lisbon
Some of the highlights of the trip are:
Apparition Chapel
Built on the exact site where the Virgin appeared to the 3 children. Originally built in 1919, it was destroyed in 1921 and rebuilt the following year. There you will find the famous Our Lady of Fatima statue commemorating the event, which was canonically crowned in 1947 and sculpted according to the exact memories of the surviving shepherd girl (Sister Lúcia).
The Sanctuary of the Basilica
The final resting place for the children who first witnessed the miracle, and home to a number of religious and important historical artifacts, including statues of the popes who visited and even a piece of the Berlin Wall!
Holy Trinity Church
The fourth largest church in the world, it is a modern wonder of design. The church was designed to accommodate the increasing number of people, since the Basilica itself could not be enlarged any further. Finished in 2007, the church is a minor basilica in its own right and houses a fragment of the marble tomb of St. Peter from the Vatican.
