Enjoy a Cascais Day Trip and an Estoril Tour from Lisbon! Both are coastal cities known for, among many other things, their spectacular beaches. Both towns are found on what is known as the Estoril Coast. Enjoy our Cascais Day Trip and Estoril Tour along with our return leg, Cabo da Roca to Lisbon. Cabo da Roca will be the highlight of the day with spectacular views from the westernmost point or Europe.
Cascais Day Trip
The old streets of Cascais continue to have the charm and glamour of the past century. Together with Estoril and Sintra, they are known as the Portuguese Riviera. Some of the highlights that you will be able to visit during the Cascais Day Trip are:
Historic Quarter of Cascais
One of the most important places in Cascais is its historic quarter and citadel. In this part of Cascais, you can visit the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes (Our Lady of the Navigators) — one of the few monuments to survive the devastating earthquake of 1775 — as well as the 5th of October Plaza, the heart of the historic downtown.
The Citadel of Cascais
The Citadel is another place that we’ll see in Cascais. It was built in the 16th century and contains the Nossa Senhora de la Luz (Our Lady of Light) Fortress, a garden that houses an open-air museum with artillery and a small chapel covered with 17th century tiles. From the citadel, we’ll enjoy one of the best panoramic views in the area.
The Cascais Marina and its Beaches
The Marina — that is, the Paseo Marímito — might be the most visited place in Cascais. It is a beautiful 2-kilometer path that leads to the town of Estoril, passing by mansions and magnificent beaches where you can take a dip in the water, such as Praia da Rata or Praia do Tamariz; or, perhaps, we could stop at one of the bars or restaurants to have a drink and enjoy the sunshine.
Praia de Ribera is the main beach in Cascais, which overlooks the fishing port and the fortress. There are also other, more relaxed beaches next to the historic downtown such as Praia Rainha, Pescadores and Conceicao.
Other stops that can be included in the Cascais Day Trip
Cascais offers so much to enjoy! Some stops that we can add to the tour include:
- The Market is always a great idea; located ten minutes from the center of town, this historic site has become a must-see on Wednesdays and Saturdays when all the stores are open and we can enjoy the hustle and bustle in all its glory.
- The Museum of the Sea recreates the birth of fishing in Cascais, with interesting marine artifacts, ship models and old photos.
- Just one kilometer from Cascais you’ll find Boca do Inferno (“The Mouth of Hell”), a cliff formation with a unique sea arch. It’s a true wonder of nature, with a surprising history – it was once a marine cave that ended up collapsing, leaving behind a sea arch and a huge gap. You’ll be amazed to see and hear how the gigantic waves hit the massive rocky barrier and violently barrel through the arch, almost like an erupting volcano!
Estoril Tour
Without a doubt, the top attraction in our Estoril Tour is the Estoril Casino, which opened in 1931. During the Cascais Day Trip and Estoril Tour, the casino will be a stop you have to see! It’s the largest casino in Europe thanks to its 1960s expansion. During World War II it was often visited by spies, monarchs and the elite and served as the inspiration for famous writer Ian Fleming’s first James Bond work, Casino Royale.
This small town still has an elite reputation for having housed royalty and European politicians and passing through the streets you’ll see numerous luxury properties and even some mansions.
Cabo da Roca to Lisbon
From Estoril to Cascais and finally from Cabo da Roca to Lisbon. The Cabo da Roca, our last stop, is a beautiful cliff rising up 140 meters (over 450 ft) from the Atlantic Ocean. It marks the westernmost tip of continental Europe. Located about 18 km (11 miles) from Sintra and only 25 miles from Lisbon, it’s an included stop in our Cascais and Estoril trip. At Cabo da Roca you can also see the lighthouse that dates back to 1772, making it one of the oldest in Portugal.
