In our efforts to offer you the most unique and unforgettable experiences, we have designed a weekend Truffle Hunting Tour in Spain. An experience that combines the authenticity and charm of rural Spain and the unforgettable experience of hunting truffles with a local farmer!
Truffles in Spain
Truffles are a variety of subterranean mushroom which are both highly sought after and extremely difficult to find. They grow on the roots of trees along the Mediterranean (Spain, southern France and Italy), most notably on Holm Oak and Hazel trees.
While there are more than 20 species of truffles found around Europe, only a very select few have real culinary value. In Spain the dominate variety is the Tuber Melanosporum, the famous black truffle. Harvested during the winter months, this delicacy can easily fetch over $700 per kilo. Black truffles have a well-deserved place of honor due to their intense and unique aroma which imparts an incomparable flavor to any dish in which it is used.
More about our Truffle Hunting Tour in Spain
‘Where’ and ‘When’
We designed the truffle hunting tour as a way to spend 4 days in the heart of Spain. That means you will discover more than just one of the hidden treasures of Spain’s vibrant culinary scene: Truffles! But, as always, the tour can be personalized to your preferences. We recommend a minimum of 2 days to really enjoy the region and the truffle experience.
The Truffle Hunting Tour takes place in Aragon, one of the best regions in Spain to search for truffles.
The hunting season starts in December and finishes in mid-March so we only offer the tour during those dates. In order to better enjoy the tour we also recommend to do it during the weekend so you can experience the truffle market.
What are we going to do?
We’ve put together a tour that allows you to discover more about the “black gold” of Spanish cuisine. But we go beyond just learning about truffles and tasting them (which you will do at a special truffle-themed meal). Because we also invite you to participate in a cooking truffle workshop with a local chef, visit a truffle market where you can meet the farmers and buy truffles, and even get the chance to get your hands dirty – literally! – as we take you out truffle hunting with a local farmer and his dog! And the tour takes in more than just truffles, as we will also dive into the world of Spanish wine, visiting some local wineries to taste some of the best wines from one of Spain’s up-and-coming wine regions.
